Kafue Lechwe

The Kafue Lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis) is an ungulate (hoofed) mammal in the antelope family of waterbucks. It is a sub-species of the Southern Lechwe.

The Kafue Lechwe has golden-brown fur with a white underbelly. The male is darker than the female. The male has long, spiral horns, similar in shape to a lyre musical instrument. The female does not have horns. Its hind (back) legs are longer than other antelope legs. It is adapted to long-distance running. It has large ears with black markings.

CREATURE FEATURE: African Forest Buffalo

The African Forest Buffalo (Syncerus caffer nanus) is a sub-species of the African buffalo. It is also known as the Dwarf Buffalo or the Congo Buffalo. It is related to the Cape Buffalo. 

The African Forest Buffalo has reddish-brown fur with darker fur around its face. Its ears have long fringes of hair. It has short, backward-facing horns.

CREATURE FEATURE: Addax

The Addax (Addax nasomaculatus) is an ungulate (hoofed) mammal in the antelope family. It is also known as the White Antelope and the Screwhorn Antelope. It is similar to the Scimitar Oryx.

The Addax has pale-coloured (white or sandy blonde) fur in summer that darkens to greyish-brown in winter. It has white hindquarters and legs. The hair on its head, neck, and shoulders is long and brown. Its head has brown or black markings that form an X-shape over its nose. The male and female have long, spiraled, and twisted horns. Long black hairs protrude between its horns, ending in a short mane on its neck. Its tail is short, ending with a tuft of black hair.

American Wood Bison

The American Wood Bison (Bison bison athabascae) is an ungulate (hoofed) mammal in the bovine (cattle) family. It is a bisonid. It is an artiodactyl, because it is cloven (split) hooved. It is also known as the American Buffalo, and is closely related to the European Bison, which is also called the European Wisent.

The American Wood Bison has a shaggy dark-brown coat of fur with a massive head. It is broad and muscular. Both the male and female have short, curved horns.

Lowland Anoa

The Lowland Anoa (Bubalus depressicornis) is an endangered ungulate (hoofed) bovid species of wild cattle in the water buffalo family. It is also known as the Midget Buffalo. Another species of the Midget Buffalo is the Mountain Anoa (Bubalus quarlesi). It is related to the Asian Water Buffalo. 

The Lowland Anoa is similar in appearance to a miniature Asian Water Buffalo. It has a strong body with brown-black fur. The male is darker in colour than the female. It has short upright horns. The female has shorter horns than the male.

Gaur

The Gaur (Bos gaurus) is a large bovine ungulate (hoofed) mammal. It is also known as the Indian Bison.  

The Gaur is a species of wild cattle with short, narrow, pointed, black-tipped horns and a prominent ridge on its back. It has large ears. It has short, glossy, dark-brown fur, which becomes almost black as it ages. Its head is often ashy-grey and its nose is whitish. It does not have a distinct dewlap (loose skin under its chin) like other bovines have. The female is lighter brown with thinner horns.

Eastern Bongo

The Eastern Bongo (Tragelaphus eurycerus isaaci) is a large, critically endangered ungulate (hoofed) mammal. It is a bovine antelope. It is also known as the Mountain Bongo.

The Eastern Bongo has reddish-brown fur, black and white markings, 10-15 white vertical stripes, and long, slightly-spiralled horns (they twist only once). Both the male and the female have hollow horns, but the male has longer horns. It has a white stripe between its eyes and two white spots on its cheeks. It has large ears. It has a black nose and white lips.

Transcaspian Urial

The Transcaspian Urial (Ovis orientalis arkal) is a wild sheep, and an ungulate (hoofed) mammal. It is also known as an Arkal. It is related to the Armenian Mouflon (Ovis orientalis gmelini).

The Transcaspian Urial has reddish-brown long fur that fades in winter. The male has large horns that curve outwards. The female has shorter horns. The male also has a black ruff from its neck to its chest.

Rocky Mountain Goat

The Rocky Mountain Goat (Oreamnos americanus) is an even-toed ungulate (hoofed) mammal. It is related to the Blue Sheep (Pseudois nayaur).

The Rocky Mountain Goat has a white double coat of fur – an undercoat and an outer layer. The undercoat has fine, dense wool and the outer layer has longer, hollow hairs. Both the male and the female have beards and long black horns. It has orange-brown eyes.

Hissing Cockroach

The Hissing Cockroach (Gromphadorhina oblongonota) is an insect in the roach family. It is also known as a Wide-Horned Hisser. 

The Hissing Cockroach is dark-brown to black with red-brown on its thick, waxy exo-skeleton.  It has orange-brown sections with small spots on each side. The male has thicker, hairier antennae than the female. The male also has horn-type structures on the pronotum (the front section of its thorax). Unlike most cockroaches, the Hissing Cockroach is wingless. It has 6 legs, with pads and hooks on its feet that enable it to climb. It can even climb smooth glass.

What is the difference between an African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer caffer) and an Asian Water Buffalo (Bubalus bubalis)?

The African Buffalo or Cape Buffalo is not related to the Asian Water Buffalo.

The African Buffalo has an almost black coat, whereas the Asian Water Bufffalo has a blue-grey coat.

The African Buffalo has larger horns than the Asian Water Buffalo.

Thomson’s Gazelle

The Thomson’s Gazelle (Gazella thomsonii) is a common large east African antelope. It is nicknamed the Tommy.

The Thomson’s Gazelle has cinnamon-coloured fur with white underparts (but not above the tail), separated by a bold black side stripe. It has a black tail. It has a white throat patch and facial markings. It has a dark marking on its face. The male has horns that are large and strongly ridged, growing to 25-43 centimetres (10-17 inches) long. The female has very small horns, that are 8-15 centimetres (3-6 inches) long.
