Three-Banded Plover

The Three-Banded Plover (Charadrius tricollaris) is also called the Three-Banded Sandplover. It is a small wetland wading bird from southern Africa.

The Three-Banded Plover has brown upperparts and white underparts, with two black chest bands separated by a white band, which make the three bands. Its head has a black crown, a white ‘headband’ (called a supercilia), and a grey face. Its eye-ring is red. Its beak is red with a black tip.

Goliath Heron

The Goliath Heron (Ardea goliath) is also known as the Giant Hero because it is the world’s largest heron. It is a very large wading bird found in Sub-Saharan Africa, with a few colonies in Asia.

The Goliath Heron is medium-grey with chestnut coloured feathers. Its head and crest, face, and the back and side of the neck are chestnut brown. Its chin, throat, and chest are white with black streaks across the neck and upper chest. Its beak, legs, and feet are black and its eyes are yellow.

Yellow-Billed Stork

The Yellow-Billed Stork (Mycteria ibis) is a large wading wetlands bird from sub-Saharan Africa (mainly East Africa) and Madagascar. Although its scientific name is Mycteria ibis, it is not an ibis.

It is white with a short black tail and a deep yellow beak (bill), which is slightly decurved at the end. Its face and forehead has deep red skin and its legs are pink.

The Yellow-Billed Stork wades in shallow water with high-steps. It is a medium-sized wader, growing to 90–105 centimetres (35–41 inches) tall.

Hadada Ibis

The Hadada Ibis (Bostrychia hagedash) is a medium-sized, common African wading bird, found in the grasslands, rainforests, and urban areas of Sudan, Ethiopia, Senegal, Uganda, Tanzania, Gabon, Zaire, Cameroon, Gambia, Kenya, Somalia and South Africa.

The Hadada Ibis has brown and iridescent green feathers, a long black downward-curved beak with a red stripe on it upper mandible (top beak), and long black legs. It is related to the Spoonbill.

CREATURE FEATURE: Shoebill

The Shoebill (Balaeniceps rex) is a large wading bird in the Balaenicipitidae family with a beak that looks like a shoe. It is from tropical east Africa, in countries such as South Sudan, Uganda, and Zambia, especially in marshes and wetlands with papyrus plants.

The Shoebill has blue-grey feathers, grey legs with large feet, a short neck, a short grey crest, green-blue eyes, and a large pinkish-grey beak. It has the third longest beak of all birds, after the pelican and the stork.

CREATURE FEATURE: Saddle-Billed Stork

The Saddle-Billed Stork (Ephippiorhynchus senegalensis) is a bird  in the Ciconiiformes family.

It has striking colours with an iridescent black head, neck, back, wings, and tail. The rest of the body and primary flight feathers are white. It has a long, red beak (bill) with a black band and a yellow shield called the saddle (like a horse’s saddle). It has  black legs and feet with pink knees.

The male has black eyes and the female has yellow eyes.

Black-Winged Stilt

The Black-Winged Stilt(Himantopus himantopus himantopus) is a bird in the Recurvirostridae family of waders. It is a long-legged wading bird. Stilts refer to the long legs, and himantopus means thong foot or strap foot. It is also called the Common Stilt or Pied Stilt.

The Black-Winged Stiltis black and white, with long pink legs and a long, thin black beak. The male has a black back. The female has brownish backs.
