Common Pheasant

The Common Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is a large game bird. It is also called the Ring-Necked Pheasant.

The Common Pheasant can be various colours, from white to black. It is generally gold or coppery-red and chestnut-brown with an iridescent sheen of green and purple. It has a white neck ring. It has a long, black tail, flecked with brown feathers. Its wings are white or cream with black bars. Its head is dark-green with a small crest and a distinctive red wattle. The female is dull brown.

Temminck’s Tragopan Pheasant

The Temminck’s Tragopan Pheasant (Tragopan temminckii) is a medium-sized bird.

The male Temminck’s Tragopan Pheasant is red and orange, with white-spotted feathers. It has a black beak and pink legs. Its facial skin is blue and bare with no feathers. It has inflatable dark-blue wattles (skin flaps) on its face. The female has brown and white-spotted feathers with blue circular eye skin.

Great Argus

The Great Argus (Argusianus argus) is a bird in the pheasant family. It is a Galliforme, which includes heavy-bodied ground-feeding birds, such as the turkey, grouse, chicken, quail, partridge, francolin, and pheasant. It is also known as the Giant Argus. 

The Great Argus has brown feathers and a blue head and neck, with a rufous (red-brown) upper chest. It has black hair-like feathers on its crown and nape. It has red legs. The male has very long tail feathers and wing feathers covered in eye-spots. The female has a shorter tail and fewer eye-spots on its wings. 

The Argus in Greek mythology is a hundred-eyed giant. The Great Argus bird has eye-shaped pattern on its wings that resemble the hundred-eyed giant.

Reeves’s Pheasant

The Reeves’s Pheasant (Syrmaticus reevesii) is a large galliform game bird.

The Reeves’s Pheasant has gold, white, black, and reddish feathers, grey legs, and bare red skin around its eyes. Its beak is pale-cream, and its head is white with a narrow black band across its brown eyes. It has a very long, silvery-white tail with chestnut-brown bars. The female is brown with a blackish crown, a buff face, and a barred greyish-brown tail.

Crested Wood Partridge

The Crested Wood Partridge (Rollulus roulroul) is also called the Roul-Roul or the Red-Crowned Wood Partridge. It is a small game bird in the Phasianidae family of pheasants.

The Crested Wood Partridge is a short, rounded short-tailed bird. It has a scarlet-red patch of bare skin around its eyes with a red eye-ring. It has red legs, without a spur or hind (back) toe. The male is metallic iridescent green on its upperparts with glossy dark-blue on its underparts. It has a purplish wing panel. Its head has a white forehead spot, black bristles, and a tall red crest.

The female has pea-green body, a grey head with bristles but no spot and no crest.  It has a brownish wing panel. The male and female have a dark-grey beak and pink-grey to red legs.

The Common Caucasus Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus colchicus) is a large game bird.

The Common Caucasus Pheasant has a gold or coppery-red and chestnut-brown body with an iridescent sheen of green and purple. It has a long, black tail, flecked with brown feathers. Its wings are white or cream with black bars. Its head is dark-green with a small crest and a distinctive red wattle. It does not have a white neck ring, like other Common Pheasants. The female is dull brown.

Silver Pheasant

The Silver Pheasant (Lophura nycthemera) is a large game bird.

The Silver Pheasant has a bare red face and red legs. The male is black and white, with white upperparts and a white tail with some black markings. He has glossy blue-black underparts. His crest is blue-black. The female is mainly brown with grey upperparts, with a tail that has a lot of black markings. She has whitish underparts. The female has a shorter tail than the male.

Golden Pheasant

The Golden Pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) is also called the Chinese Pheasant. It it a game bird from western China.

The male Golden Pheasant has a golden-yellow crest with red at the tip. Its face, throat, chin, and the sides of its neck are rust-brown. Its wattles are yellow, and its cape is light orange. Its back and rump are golden-yellow. It has patches of blue and dark red. The male’s tail plumage is black spotted with cinnamon. The male also has a scarlet chest.

The female is not as coloured, appearing dark mottled brown. The female’s chest is light-brown and dark-brown. Both males and females have yellow legs and yellow beaks. Both males and females have bright yellow eyes.
