What are matriarchal and patriarchal societies?
A matriarchal society or group has a female leader or several female leaders.
A clan of Spotted Hyenas is an example of a matriarchal group. A hive of bees is matriarchal, with the Queen Bee as the leader.
A patriarchal society or group has a male leader or several male leaders. A troop of chimpanzees are patriarchal.
Many animal species are neither matriarchal or patriarchal. For example, there are paired (partnered) animals and solitary animals.
