Marsupial Pouches

What are marsupial pouches?

Marsupial mammals include the Bandicoot, Kangaroo, Koala, Opossum, Tasmanian Devil, Wallaby, and Wombat.

Marsupial mammals are animals with pouches to carry their young. The female has the pouch.

There are different kinds of marsupial pouches.

Kangaroo (with joey)

One type of marsupial pouch is where the opening is at the top (facing the head of the female parent). The female kangaroo has a top opening pouch.

The other type of marsupial pouch is where the opening is ‘backward’ near the tail of the female parent. The female Tasmanian Devil and the wombat have a backward opening pouch.

The koala has a pouch that opens outwards, although the opening is located towards the bottom of the pouch.
