Bird Eggs: Colours and Stains

Bird eggs can be many colours.

Different bird species lay different coloured eggs. The eggs can be all one colour or they can have stains, called blotches, spots, patterns, speckles, and markings.

Most birds lay white, cream, or light beige eggs.

Birds that have nests in trees and shrubs usually have blue to green eggs, plain or spotted.

Birds that have nests in hollow tree trunks or holes usually have white to pale blue eggs.

Birds that have nests on the ground usually have brown or speckled eggs that are camouflaged against the colour of the ground.
