What is an invertebrate?

A vertebrate is an animal with a spine – a backbone. Vertebrates include fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals.

An invertebrate is an animal without a spine. 

Invertebrates include insects, arachnids (spiders), molluscs (snails), crustaceans (crabs), worms, coral, starfish, sponges, and jellyfish.
