The Mammoth Wasp (Megascolia maculate) is a large insect.

The Mammoth Wasp looks like a large Bumblebee. The female has a yellow-orange head, whereas the male has a black head. Its body has fine hairs and is glossy black with two yellow bands across its abdomen. 

It measures about 6 centimetres (2.5 inches) in length. The male is smaller than the female. The female has shorter antennae than the male. 

The Mammoth Wasp is native to southern Europe, from the Czech Republic to Russia, and north Africa. It prefers oak forests. 

The larva (grub) of the Mammoth Wasp eats the European Rhinoceros Beetle (Oryctes nasicornis). It stings the beetle first, and paralyzes it. The adult Mammoth Moth feeds on nectar from flowers. 

The female Mammoth Wasp lays one egg on the larvae of the European Rhinoceros Beetle. The egg hatches into a larva, called the larval wasp, which eats the larva of the beetle. The larval wasp then builds a cocoon and pupates, emerging from the cocoon as an adult moth. This is called metamorphosis.
