The Pearlscale Cichlid (Herichthys carpintis) is also known as the Lowland Cichlid or the Green Texas Cichlid. It is a freshwater fish.
The Pearlscale Cichlid has an oval-shaped body. It is blue-green with iridescent scales. It has red eyes. The female has a black blotch on its dorsal fin.
It measures about 17 centimetres (7 inches) in length.
The Pearlscale Cichlid is native to Mexico. It prefers lagoons. It is territorial and chases away other cichlids from its territory.
It is an omnivore, feeding on shrimp, small fish, worms, insects, and vegetation.
The female Pearlscale Cichlid lays eggs on a smooth, flat surface, such as a rock. Both the male and female parents fan the eggs with their fins to provide them with oxygenated water. The eggs hatch after 2 days into small fry.
